The Qmuzik Industrial Engineering Prize “Alumni Spotlight” series celebrates over a decade of engineering excellence, highlighting five distinguished winners who have transitioned from their studies at Stellenbosch University to influential roles across the global economy.

This campaign underscores the profound impact of peer recognition, as every winner noted that being nominated or voted for by their classmates served as a vital early-career confidence booster.

OVERVIEW OF THE PRIZE-WINNERS

The featured alumni demonstrate the extraordinary versatility of an Industrial Engineering (IE) foundation:

Denzil Kennon (2007): A pioneer in applying a first-principles engineering mindset to the financial sector. His career has spanned investment management, venture capital, and infrastructure finance, currently focusing on private debt at Futuregrowth Asset Management.

Pierre Lategan (2008): A strategy consultant who moved from heavy industry (oil, gas, and mining) to global tech at Uber. He has since returned to South Africa to focus on building inclusive banking solutions for everyday citizens.

Hilde Kruger (2013): An expert in end-to-end supply chains, she has managed global logistics for iconic brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein (PVH Corp) from Amsterdam. Her career is defined by building frameworks that unite people and data.

Hein Stegmann (2016): Transitioned from supply chain consulting for major retailers to technical leadership in nanofiber technologies. He manages a broad portfolio ranging from machine design to global client engagement.

Ashwin Kamaldien (2022): A specialist in business process engineering, he has applied systems thinking and waste elimination to projects for LIV Village, Old Mutual Insure, and Capitec Bank.

THE “SWISS ARMY KNIFE” PHILOSOPHY

A central theme across all five winners is the description of the IE degree as a “Swiss Army Knife” skill set. The sources highlight that the degree provides a rare breadth of capability; technical, operational, and strategic, allowing engineers to stay grounded in problem-solving regardless of the industry they enter.

NAVIGATING THE FUTURE OF AI

The campaign reveals a unified stance on the rise of Artificial Intelligence:

  • Augmentation, Not Replacement: AI is viewed as a powerful amplifier of human ingenuity that can reduce repetitive cognitive tasks.
  • The Principle Over the Tool: Winners cautioned that tools should not replace foundational thinking or the “struggle” that builds engineering instinct.
  • Problem-First Mindset: Young engineers are advised to deeply understand the problem before leading with technology.

COLLECTIVE ADVICE FOR YOUNG ENGINEERS

The campaign concludes with a “Success Blueprint” for the next generation:

  1. Build Strong Fundamentals: Put in the “hard yards” to master core skills and understand the principles underpinning modern tools.
  2. Dare to Build the Plane in the Air: Embrace uncertainty and ambiguity; great engineering often requires learning and building while in motion.
  3. Prioritise Human Connection: All winners emphasized that trust, integrity, and how you treat people matter more than job titles or metrics.

Ultimately, the Qmuzik Prize series serves as a reminder that while grades fade, the peer belief and human-centred leadership cultivated during an engineering degree create an impact that travels far beyond the classroom.
